Protein And Carbohydrates

All major elements of food, protein, carbohydrates and fat are important for our wellbeing. Most foods contain protein and carbohydrates. Many foods do not contain any fat and some are high in fat. Fat is important. We need fat and if you want to lose weight and body fat you need to get enough fat as your body would otherwise hold on to your body fat. With enough I mean as much as your body needs, but not way too much. But this article is about protein and carbohydrates. There are protein rich and carbohydrate rich foods.

Eating a lot of protein makes you lose weight quicker, but to be low on carbs can be life threatening. Protein rich foods have a little content of nutrients. Nutrients are important for all our life functions. To eat enough protein and get enough good carbohydrates (rich on carbo and nutrients are fruits are vegetables) is the best choice.

I advice that you look up the nutritive value of foods you eat for a few days, that you get a feeling about which foods are rich in protein or which are rich in carbo.

I advice that you read articles from different sources as there are different points of view about certain carbohydrate rich food and make your own point of view. My point of view might be wrong or it might be right for me and wrong for you.
Do not get stuck on one view which you read sometimes somewhere. Even not when you read that it was scientifically proven. Constantly new research is done, which makes the old knowledge false. This is what research is about and more so “life”. There is only one thing which is and will always be right: Everything changes constantly.

It is now 12 years that I do not eat grain products (e.g. breads, pasta, pizza, pastry). I not only am slim, but also doing very fine. I have learned (at school) that grains are eaten by birds, who can digest that stuff. We humans can’t fully digest grains. Grains have to be milled into powder that we can eat them. What is not digested stays in the body. Together with fat it clogs arteries and the result is a heart attack.

Our body needs the energy from carbohydrates to fully function, especially our brain. Our body converts carbo into glucose, which is used to fuel our cells. There are simple carbohydrastes which consist of 1 or 2 sugar units, complex carbohydrates consist of many sugar units (rice, bread, pasta, vegetables.) The third kind of carbs is fibre.

Eating too much of simple carbs (e.g. crystal sugar, syrup, molasses, honey) cause surges in blood sugar levels, which increases insulin release, which increases appetite without the need of nutritional energy = reason of weight gain. Most soft drinks contain a lot of simple sugars but no valuable nutrients. Skip those and drink water! Fruits also contain simple carbs but also valuable vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water. Milk products contain simple carbs and protein.
Vegetables and legumes contain simple and complex carbs and are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and water.

We have to eat carbohydrates. And if one does not eat grain products there are other carbohydrate rich foods, which are absolutely healthy, quickly digested and, most importantly, they are nutrient rich.

Also when it comes to protein you find different points of view. Why are we not sitting side by side with some apes on the branch of a tree? It is believed that the change happened when some apes began to eat more animal protein. Apes are still running behind spiders and other tiny animals, and they love to eat ants. They instinctively know that they need animal protein. What would happen to them, would they be fed a steak and a couple of eggs each day? The outcome would be interesting. Even more so when this experiment would be continued continued for several generations.

Let’s get back to the human race. We became hunters and ate a lot of good animal protein. We do not live on trees anymore and also not in a cave. We live in large towns, have cars and an enormous offer of different foods, whereby “not all should are right for human consumption” (meaning some of the overly processed foods which actually are dead matter with no nutritional value, except having calories).

Protein does not make us want to eat more and more and more, which is the case with carbohydrates rich in sugars (simple and or complex). There are people who can empty an extra large bag filled with calorie rich cookies and after the bag is empty they might go get another one. How many steaks can one eat? Not so many. The reason: Protein satiates.

Eat a variety of fruits, and vegetables, combine it with high quality meats, fish, eggs, cheese made of raw milk and nuts.

About Christa Herzog

In my late teens I was 1 1/2 times more of what I am now. It took me years to lose those 50 pounds. Of course all diets failed. At the end I did it right and kept excess weight off until I was in my fourties and moved from Los Angeles to Vienna and gained a couple of pounds. I did not want to believe that this has to do with age and studied foods. I found out so much. Plus: I became a raw food eater. In a matter of several weeks I had my slim figure back. In this blog I will share my knowledge about food.

  2. It’s pretty awesome having nutrition as my life. I always tell people when they ask me what kind of supplements to take.
